Parade Volunteers

Have you ever wondered what the parade is like before it begins? Or are you curious about what goes on behind the scenes to put together such a great parade? Have you ever thought, “WOW that was a great parade, wish I could’ve helped put that one together!” Being a parade volunteer is a great way to see the parade floats, bands and mingle with great neighbors in our community. Take a look below at the different parade volunteer positions and…

Wait no more… Become a PARADE VOLUNTEER!!!

Parade Marshals

Before the parade, the parade marshals walk the parade staging area and confirm each parade participant has checked-in, they have received their entry number, their entry number is placed in the correct location to be visible to the judges and the parade participants are lined up in the correct order.

The parade marshal will need to answer questions from parade participants, be pleasant and helpful, and assist in the overall enjoyment of the parade participants.

Fifteen minutes before the parade starts, have each of the parade participants move forward and prepare for the start of the parade. At this time, it is very important to make sure participants are in their correct order.

During the parade, parade marshals walk along the parade route, helping maintain a curb line keeping the streets clear of pedestrians and thereby allowing the parade to move freely down the streets. This is for the safety of everyone. They also maintain proper spacing between entries ensuring gaps are kept to a minimum up to the reviewing stand. And the are available to answer questions from spectators. Remember to “Be Firm, but Friendly, Courteous and Kind.

Most importantly, remember to “HAVE FUN.”

Parade Check-in

As the parade participants arrive, you’ll be in charge of checking them in, hand-out a parade participant packet that includes their parade number and directing them to their staging area.

Staging Area Set-up/Tear-down

The parade staging area is where parade participants meet and get ready for the parade. Set-up includes placing the entry numbers along the staging route so participants can find there staging area. Set-up also includes getting the registration check-in area ready for the arrival of the parade participants.

Reviewing Stand Set-up/Tear-down

The reviewing stand is where the judges and dignitaries sit and where the so important judging of parade entries takes place. Before the parade we decorate seating area and announcers stage so it fits in with the parade theme.

Judging Coordinator

The judging coordinator greets the announcers and judges upon their arrival. Handout judging forms and explains judging criteria to judges. Provide announcers with the Master parade line-up and announcers’ sheet and update announcer and judges on any changes in order of the parade.

After the parade, retrieve judge’s tabulation sheets for awards, report any problems and remain following parade to collect volunteer vests and radios. Assist with the tabulation of judge’s scores and determine winning entries. Update awards tally board that will be displayed at the information booth.

Dignitary Host

Greet dignitary’s upon their arrival and assisting them to the dignitary assembly area. Coordinates the placement of the dignitary in a vehicle (if necessary), assists with signage (if necessary) and otherwise makes certain that the dignitary is informed, comfortable and happy.

Set-up donuts and coffee at the reviewing stand and registration check-in areas and coordinate lunch for parade volunteers. Make sure the flowers for dignitaries and special guests have been purchased and are on hand ready to be given to the dignitaries and special guests.
