Maryanna Rickner

U.S. Navy Veteran

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as the youngest of five children, Maryanna Rickner enlisted in the Navy in September 1985 after graduating from Marion High School in Marion, Iowa. She completed basic training “boot camp” at Naval Recruit Training Center in Orlando, Florida in November 1985 and completed Class “A” School at Naval Technical Training Center, Corry Station in Pensacola, Florida in February 1986.

Ms. Rickner was stationed at Naval Security Group Detachment in Sugar Grove, West Virginia (February 1986-September 1988) and at Naval Security Group Activity in Misawa, Japan (October 1988-July 1992). She was on active duty during the war eras of Panama (Operation Just Cause) and the Persian Gulf War (Desert Shield/Desert Storm). During her service, she was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, a Navy Achievement Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (3 awards). In addition, she was selected as Communicator of the Quarter, nominated for Senior Sailor of the Quarter, and received letters of commendation and appreciation. In July 1992, after almost seven years on active duty, Ms. Rickner was honorably discharged from active duty as a Petty Officer Second Class.

After earning an Associate in Science degree in Legal Assistant from Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania in May 1998, Ms. Rickner worked as a title searcher for an abstract company in Pennsylvania. Since relocating to California in 1999, she has worked in the legal profession in the Sacramento area for a family law firm, the California State Board of Education, and for the past 14 years for the Sacramento County Office of Education. Ms. Rickner is a current member and a past treasurer of the Sacramento Legal Secretaries Association.

As a member of American Legion Post 233 (Elk Grove), Ms. Rickner has chaired several committees that include The American Legion Walk for Veterans and The American Legion Blood Donor Program; serves on the Post 233 Color Guard and Honor Guard; and volunteers to aid in many events and activities benefitting veterans and their families. In addition, she is a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 233 (Elk Grove) and serves as advisor to Sons of The American Legion Squadron 233 (Elk Grove).

Ms. Rickner and her loving husband, James Rickner II, have been married for 16 years and have been residents of Elk Grove since 2003. Their two adult sons, Brian Sakalas and Nathan Sakalas, are graduates of Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove.
